Surah An-Nas, Al-Falaq, Al-Ikhlas

Recite Morning and Evening three times
each they will suffice you against everything

Mu`adh bin `Abdullah bin Khubaib,
narrated from his father, who said:
“We went out on a rainy and extremely dark night, looking for the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), so that he could lead us in Salat.” He said: “So I met him and he (ﷺ) said: ‘Speak’ but I did not say anything. Then he (ﷺ) said: ‘Speak.’ But I did not say anything. He (ﷺ) said: ‘Speak.’ So I said: ‘What should I say?’ He (ﷺ) said: ‘Say: “Say: He is Allah, the One” and Al-Mu`awwidhatain, when you reach evening, and when you reach morning, three times, they will suffice you against everything.’”

How To Pray Witr & How Many Rak'ah

How To Pray Witr & How Many Rak'ah?

How To Pray Witr & How Many Rak'ah?

As we mentioned before, the Witr should be an odd numbered of rak’ah. So the minimum number of rak’ah is one (which is the Sunnah) and it can go up to three, five, seven, nine..etc.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Witr is a duty, so whoever likes to pray witr with five let him do so, and whoever likes to pray witr with three let him do so, and whoever likes to pray witr with one let him do so."
[Ibn Majah 1190]

The Prophet (May the Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

"Witr is one rak'ah at the end of the night."
[An-Nasa'i 1689]

And the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:

"The night prayers are [performed] two by two, but if one of you fears that dawn is about to break, let him pray one rak’ah.
[An-Nasa'i 1671]

How to Pray Three Rak'ah for Witr

For those who pray three rak’as of Witr, there are two ways in which it can be performed:

1. To pray all three rak’ahs continuously right after each other without the middle tashahhud. Meaning, there will be only one Tashahhud which is the Final tashahhud. As narrated by Ai’sha (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Prophet (ﷺ) used not to say the tasleem in the (first) two rakahs of Witr.

According to another version: “He used to pray Witr with three rak'ahs and he did not sit except in the last of them.”
Narrated by [Al-Nasaa’i, 3/234; al-Bayhaqi, 3/31]

2. To pray the first two rak’ahs separately ending it with tasleem then praying the last rak’ah separately. So having two final tashhahud.

As narrated by Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), that he used to separate the two rak'ahs from the single rak'ah with a tasleem, and he said that the Prophet (ﷺ) used to do that.
Narrated by Ibn Hibbaan (2435); Ibn Hajar said in al-Fath (2/482): its isnaad is strong.

The Prophet (ﷺ) also advised to not perform Witr like the Maghrib prayer “Do not pray Witr with three rak’ahs like Maghrib.”
[Al-Haakim, 1/403 ]

How to Pray Five or Seven Rak'ah for Witr

For those who decide to pray five or seven rak’ah for witr, then it should be continuous and should consist of only one tashahhud which is the final one followed by the tasleem.

This is because it was narrated by A’isha "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to pray thirteen rak'ah at night, praying five rak'ahs of witr, in which he would not sit except in the last rak’ah."
[Muslim: 737]

And it was narrated that Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said:

"The Prophet (ﷺ) used to pray witr with five or seven (rak’ah) and he did not separate between them with any salaam or words."
[Ahmad, 6/290; al-Nasaa’i, 1714]

How to Pray Nine Rak'ah for Witr

For those who decide to pray nine rak’ah for witr, then he/she should be pray continuously until the eight rak’ah where one is to sit and recite the tashahhud without the tasleem.

He then should stand up for the ninth rak’ah and end it with the final tashahhud.

As it was narrated by A’isha "The Prophet (ﷺ) used to pray nine rak'ahs in which he did not sit except in the eighth, when he would remember Allah, praise Him and call upon Him, then he would get up and not say the tasleem, and he would stand up and pray the ninth (rak'ah), then he would sit and remember Allah and praise Him and call upon Him, then he would say a tasleem that we could hear."
[Muslim: 746 a]

How to Pray Eleven Rak'ah for Witr

For those who decide to pray eleven rak’ah for witr, then it should be prayer two by two (with tasleem after each two rak’ah) and then end it with one rak’ah.

Surah Maryam ,verses 5-6

This dua can be recited:
  • To have a baby
  • To make your children obedient, pious and righteous
  • To have a safe pregnancy and delivery
This is the supplication of Prophet ZakariyyaAlaihissalaam.

Allah Subhaanahu wata’ala says in the Holy Quran:-
(2. A reminder of the mercy of your Lord to His servant Zakariyya.) (3. When he called his Lord with a call in secret.) (4. He said: “My Lord! Indeed my bones have grown feeble, and gray hair has Ashta`al on my head, and I have never been unblessed in my invocation to You, O my Lord!”) (5. “And verily, I fear Mawali after me, and my wife is barren. So give me from Yourself an heir.”) (6. “Who shall inherit me, and inherit (also) the posterity of Ya`qub. And make him, my Lord, one with whom You are well-pleased!”)

The Story of Zakariyya Alaihissalaam and his Supplication for a son

He was a great Prophet from the Prophets of the Children of Israel. In Sahih Al-Bukhari, it is recorded that the Prophet said about Zakariyya Alaihissalaam that He was a carpenter who used to eat from what he earned with his own hand through carpentry.

Concerning Allah’s statement,

(When he called his Lord with a call in secret.) He only made his supplication secretly because it is more beloved to Allah. This is similar to what Qatadah said concerning this Ayah,

”Verily, Allah knows the pious heart and he hears the hidden voice.”

(He said: “My Lord! Indeed my bones have grown feeble…”) meaning, “I have become weak and feeble in strength.”

(and gray hair has Ashta`al on my head,) means the gray hair has burned into the black hair. The intent is to inform of weakness and old age, and its external and internal traces.

(and I have never been unblessed in my invocation to You, O my Lord!) This means, “I have not experienced from You except that You would respond to my supplication and that You would never refuse me in whatever I ask of You.”

(And verily, I fear Mawali after me,) Mujahid, Qatadah and As-Suddi, all said, “In saying the word Mawali, he (Zakariyya) meant his succeeding relatives.” The reason for his fear was that he was afraid that the generation that would succeed him would be a wicked generation. Thus, he asked Allah for a son who would be a Prophet after him, who would guide them with his Prophethood and that which was revealed to him. In response to this I would like to point out that he was not afraid of them inheriting his wealth. For a Prophet is too great in status, and too lofty in esteem to become remorseful over his wealth in this fashion. A Prophet would not disdain to leave his wealth to his successive relatives, and thus ask to have a son who would receive his inheritance instead of them. This is one angle of argument.

The second argument is that Allah did not mention that Zakariyya Alaihissalaam was wealthy. On the contrary, he was a carpenter who ate from the earnings of his own hand. This type of person usually does not have a mass of wealth. Amassing wealth is not something normal for Prophets, for verily, they are the most abstentious in matters of this worldly life.

The third argument is that it is confirmed in the Two Sahihs, in more than one narration, that the Messenger of Allah said,

(We (the Prophets) do not leave behind inheritance (of wealth). Whatever we leave behind, then it is charity.)

Therefore, the meaning in these Hadiths restricts the meaning of Zakariyya Alaihissalaam ‘s statement,

(So give me from yourself an heir. Who shall inherit me,) inheritance of Prophethood.

(and make him, my Lord, one with whom You are well-pleased!) means “Make him pleasing to You (Allah) and your creation. Love him and make him beloved to your creatures, in both his religion and his character.”

(7. (Allah said:) “O Zakariyya! Verily, We give you the good news of a son, whose name will be Yahya. We have given that name to none before (him).”)
